Mount Makalu itself is a giant mountain which is world’s fifth highest mountain with a height of 8468m. Explore the breathtaking view of high Himalayas including Mount Everest, Lhotse and Baruntse. Makalu Base Camp trek, which is now designated as Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area offers varieties of flora, fauna and geographic diversity.
The trek starts with a flight to Tumlingtar. It then passes through Arun River valley to Sedua and Num. The trek continues to cross Shipton La pass to reach upper Barun river valley to experience the closer view of Makalu and other mountains. As the trail continues to upper portion, you can view granite cliffs with glaciers and fascinating waterfalls. The best season to go for this trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
TRIP DETAILS
Day 01: Arrival
Upon arrival to Kathmandu Airport, our representative will drop you to Hotel. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 02: Visit to Kathmandu Valley
After having early morning breakfast at the hotel, we move for sightseeing around Kathmandu valley. The sightseeing includes the most popular historic places in Kathmandu such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhhanath, and Pashupatinath. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 03: Fly to Tumlingtar; Trek to Manebhangyang
Having our breakfast at the Hotel, we make our way to the airport to catch our flight to Tumlingtar. We have our lunch and start our trek with short day walk to Manebhangyang. Overnight at lodge or camp.
Day 04: Trek to Bhotebas (1720m) – 5 to 6 hours walk
Catching the spectacular views of Arun valley, we walk through the ridge line and forest areas uphill and downhill. Overnight at camp.??
Day 05: Trek to Num (1500m) – 5 to 6 hours walk
We pass through many colorful villages and forest with spectacular mountain views along to reach Num. Overnight at camp.
Day 06: Trek to Sedua (1540m) – 4 to 5 hours walk
We walk through the farm land and scanty villages inhabited by Rai and Sherpa mostly and reach Sedua. Overnight at camp.
Day 07: Trek to Tashigaon (2200m) – 3 to 4 hours walk
We walk eyeing on the scenic views of mountains, river and jungle and also villages inhabited by Sherpa and Gurung and reach Tashigaon. Overnight at camp.
Day 08: Trek to Khongma (3560m) – 3 to 4 hours walk
We trek with scenic and panoramic views surrounding us to reach Kauma. Overnight at camp.
Day 09: Cross Kongmala pass (4126m) and reach Mumbuk (3550m) – 6 to 7 hours walk
A challenging day to cross Kongmala pass situated at a height of 4126m; the walk is rough and quite difficult today but the views from the pass is totally breathtaking. We then move our way to Mumbuk. Overnight at camp.
Day 10: Trek to Yangle Kharka (2646m) – 5 to 6 hours walk
We move through the small bushes and rare houses along with few shephers till we reach Yangle Kharka. Overnight at camp.
Day 11: Rest at Yangle Kharka/Acclimatization day. Overnight at camp.
Day 12: Trek to Shersung (4614m) – 5 to 6 hours trek
We walk through through up and downs along the deserted mountain trail with any inhabitants or presence of any other living beings, besides some wildlife. Overnight at camp.
Day 13: Trek to Italian Base Camp (3660m) – 5 to 6 hours trek
We hike to Italian Base Camp today which is nearby Makalu Base Camp. The base camp is a popular spot for trekkers to view wonderful surrounding environment. Overnight at camp.
Day 14: Trek to Makalu Base camp (5250m) – 5 to 6 hours walk
We are finally off to our main highlight of the trek, Makalu Base Camp. Being a remote area, less travelers pass by but it is yet one of the beautiful trekking routes in Nepal. We capture mountain Makalu at its best and other dazzling mountains in front of us. Overnight at camp.
Day 15: Trek back to Lower Kharka (4610m) – 3 to 4 hours walk
We walk downhill along the deserted land with very few plants and trees and reach Lower Kharka. Overnight at camp.
Day 16: Trek back to Yangle Kharka – 5 to 6 hours walk
We retrace our journey back to Yangle Kharka walking through the forest area now and watching some Himalayan birds on our way. Overnight at camp.
Day 17: Trek back to Mumbuk – 5 to 5 hours walk
We descend through the trails with glimpses of mountain views and reach Mumbuk. Overnight at camp.
Day 18: Trek back to Kongma – 5 to 6 hours walk
We descend all the way and pass Shipton La and reach Kongma where you can spot few shepherds. Overnight at camp.
Day 19: Trek back to Tashi Goan – 5 to 6 hours walk
Continuing our trek downhill, we now move back to Tashi Gaon. Overnight at camp.
Day 20: Trek back to Num – 5 to 6 hours walk
We retrace our journey back to Num with downhill walk along the Arun River. Overnight at camp.
Day 21: Trek to Bhotebas – 5 to 6 hours walk
We move through the spectacular village areas and forest, which gives us plenty of opportunities to interact with the local community here. Mount Kanchenjunga and Makalu are visible from the ridge line. We then reach Bhotebas. Overnight at camp.
Day 22: Trek to Tumglingtar
Descending through the trails and capturing the final glimpses of Mount Kanchenjunga and Makalu, we arrive at big village, Khadbari, the district headquarter of Sankhuwasabha. From here, we walk down to Tumlingtar. Overnight at camp.
Day 23: Fly back to Kathmandu
Having our breakfast at the camp, we now move to catch our flight to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your Hotel. Overnight at Hotel.
